The taking of Alcatraz

~ Today in Native American History ~
June, 11, 1971: The 19 month occupation of Alcatraz Island, organized and led by Native American Activist, Musician and Poet, John Trudell, ended when the last of the protesting Native Americans - 6 men, 5 children and 4 women - were removed by Federal Marshalls.

"No matter what they ever do to us, we must always act for the love of our people and the earth. We must not react out of hatred against those who have no sense."
— John Trudell
